YRT strike talks break down

CBC News
Hopes that the York Region Transit strike might end Saturday afternoon were quashed after talks between the union and Veolia — the company running some city buses — broke down.
Bob Kinnear, president of Amalgamated Transit Union Local 113, said benefits and wages continue to be key issues.
"Our offer still stands that we brought forward into the third week of the strike in which we're prepared to put forward our arguments in front of a neutral third-party arbitrator in order to resolve this dispute and get the workers back to work immediately," Kinnear said.
"Unfortunately the employer communicated to us once again today that they are unwilling to put it in front of a neutral third party."
The York Region council has said it will not get involved in the dispute or ask the province to legislate an end to the strike.
Close to 600 workers — with three separate contractors — have been off the job since Oct. 24.
No new talks were scheduled for the other two unions, Miller Transit and First Canada.
More than 44,000 riders are affected.
