What’s open and closed this holiday weekend
|
The Civic Holiday weekend will close stores and streets around the GTA. Here’s what you need to know for a smooth start to August.
Road closures
The Scotiabank Caribbean Carnival might make it challenging to drive the city streets this weekend.
Between 1 a.m. Saturday and 6 a.m. Sunday, Lake Shore Blvd. will be closed in both directions from Colborne Lodge Dr. to Strachan Ave.
The city adds that “a significant amount of roadwork” across the downtown core will make it tricky to drive to the Caribbean celebration. It’s recommended that carnival-goers travel by transit.
Simcoe Day
Civic Holiday is celebrated Monday across Canada, with names ranging from Saskatchewan Day to Mountie Day.
In Ontario, Simcoe Day celebrates John Graves Simcoe, the first Lieutenant Governor of Upper Canada, who founded York, the precursor to the City of Toronto.
Monday holiday closures
Libraries and government offices will be closed, as will most banks and child-care centres. Mail service will be postponed until Tuesday, as will garbage service for most GTA regions.
Some Beer Store and LCBO locations will be open Monday, as will a limited number of grocery stores.
Tourist and shopping sites will remain open, including the Toronto Zoo, the ROM, Canada’s Wonderland, the Eaton Centre, and Square One mall.
The TTC will run on a holiday schedule Monday, while GO Transit will operate on its Sunday schedule.
