Transgender comedian Avery Edison moved from Milton men’s jail
Thanks to Twitter, a transgender woman detained at Pearson airport and jailed in a men’s prison had personal and political support during her ordeal.
Avery Edison, a comedian from England, began tweeting Monday evening about being denied entry to Canada and taken to Maplehurst men’s prison — even though her passport identifies her as female.
Edison admits overstaying her student visa the last time she was in Canada and that there was reason for her to be denied entry. She tweeted about being referred to as “he” instead of “she,” left for hours without food and taken away in handcuffs. As the ordeal progressed, her tweets went from humorous to dark over an eight-hour period.
