Toronto MP calls for national registry of stolen cell phones
TORONTO, Ont. - A Toronto Member of Parliament has joined a call from Toronto police to crack down on cell phone thefts.
A database has already been set up in the United States, and now MP Mike Sullivan for York South-Weston, wants one for in Canada as well.
Police in 12 Division said 85 per cent of street robberies are for cell phones or other electronics.
According to police, thieves can swap the SIM cards in stolen phones and then use them.
The national database would contain the ID numbers of stolen phones, which cell phone companies would have to check before activating any device.
