Smog advisory remains in effect for GTA
|
A smog advisory remained in effect for Toronto and the Greater Toronto Area as temperatures soared to 29 C Sunday.
The Ministry of the Environment issued the advisory for a huge swath of southern Ontario Saturday afternoon and with temperatures expected to hit 28 C Monday it's unlikely to be lifted anytime soon.
The advisory covers Hamilton and Toronto as well as Halton-Peel and York-Durham regions. Dufferin-Innisfil, Dunnville-Caledonia-Haldimand, Elgin, Grey-Bruce, Huron-Perth, London-Middlesex, Niagara, Oxford-Brant, Parry Sound-Muskoka-Huntsville, Sarnia-Lambton, Simcoe-Delhi-Norfolk, Waterloo-Wellington and Windsor-Essex-Chatham-Kent regions are also covered by the advisory.
"Hot, sunny conditions with light southerly winds blowing air pollution from the U.S. into parts of southern Ontario, combined with stagnant weather conditions allowing local build-up of pollutants are resulting in elevated smog levels across southern and parts of central Ontario," the advisory states.
A smog advisory is issued whenever the air quality index is expected to surpass 50, as it is on Sunday.
During a smog advisory, people who spend a lot of time outdoors could experience symptoms such as coughing, shortness of breath or even an asthma attack.
