School bus crash sends 9 children to hospital in Alberta
|
Nine children, one with critical injuries, have been taken to hospital after their school bus collided with a truck north of Calgary early Friday morning. The bus was picking up children along its usual route near Crossfield, about 40 kilometres north of Calgary, when it collided with the truck at a crossing at Highway 791 and Township 290 shortly after 8 a.m. One child was transported via air ambulance to Children’s Hospital in Calgary in serious condition, the RCMP Airdrie detachment said in a news release. Eight other children were taken to hospital by ground ambulance for potential broken bones and other minor injuries.
The female bus driver was also taken to hospital with unknown injuries. A collision analyst with the RCMP is at the scene to determine what happened, Const. Robert Frizzell told CTV News Channel in a telephone interview. The intersection is currently closed to traffic, Frizzell said. Early reports suggested the school bus was travelling west while the truck, identified as an F350 work truck, was headed south when they collided. The truck driver suffered minor injuries and was not taken to hospital. Police said parents of the victims have been notified. The children on the bus ranged in age from 5 to 9, Frizzell said. Crossfield Mayor Nathan Anderson said the children attended Crossfield Elementary School, one of the town’s two schools. "I am very concerned. Our prayers go out to those kids and families," Anderson said. "We just hope, God willing, they are all OK and will pull out of this without any lasting effects."
