Sammy Yatim: Police chief denies conflict of interest with inquiry judge
Police chief Bill Blair says that a review of Sammy Yatim’s death by former associate chief justice Dennis O’Connor will remain unbiased even though the ex-judge works with a law firm that represents the Police Services Board.
O’Connor practices law with Borden Ladner Gervais LLP, a law firm that represents the Police Services Board and aids in the defence of TPS officers who have wrongfully used lethal force.
Blair announced Monday he was bringing in O’Connor — who is known for conducting the Walkerton Inquiry into tainted drinking water and the Maher Arar Inquiry into rendition and torture — to help him in the review of the fatal shooting of Yatim. Blair said the review would examine the policies, procedures, training and equipment for TPS offices concerning use of force and dealing with emotionally disturbed persons, and include an international review of best practices.
