Police release suspect’s description after York U shooting
|
Two women were hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries following a shooting Thursday evening inside the food court at York University, according to Toronto EMS.
Paramedics said they responded to the call around 10:45 p.m. They initially said the two women suffered “peripheral gunshot wounds.” Police clarified that only one of the women was shot in the lower half of the body.
Toronto police say the other woman was injured by shrapnel. She has since been treated and released. They believe the women were not the intended targets of the shooting. Police have not identified the victims. Police are looking for a suspect described as a black man in his mid-20s, between 5-foot-8 and 6 feet tall wearing a black hooded sweatshirt and black coat.
York University president and vice-chancellor, Mamdouh Shoukri says they are fully co-operating with the police investigation and that their ‘immediate focus is on supporting the two students and their families, and in providing counselling support for York Community members.’ Additional security measures, including increased police presence and security patrols, are currently on campus.
Some people took to social media Thursday night to express their shock.
One person said he thought it sounded like a firecracker, but when he saw others running he ran as well. Another person said she saw “bullet holes in the chairs.”
At least one of the victims was seen carried out on a stretcher.
A sign in the student centre warned informed students that “due to an emergency at the Underground restaurant, all community members are directed to take shelter in place and stay inside until further notice.”
Four TTC buses were diverted due to the police investigation. They resumed a couple of hours later on Friday morning after the delay at York University Commons was cleared.
