Police launch campaign against financial crime

Toronto police say financial crime is such a big problem in the GTA that they're turning to websites and social media sites to get out their message — including an online 'Top 10' most-wanted list.
"We can educate the public so they're not victims of crime," Det. Gail Regan said Friday as police unveiled their new awareness campaign. "As well, we can get information through them to assist us in apprehending any of these people that are wanted," he said.
Police say organized crime is making millions by preying on Torontonians with knock-off toys, clothing and electronics. Items the force had on display Friday included iPhones and a Toronto Blue Jays cap.
"If I make a product and it's not being counterfeited, I…have to assume that my product's not very popular," Det. Rob Whalen said.
The force will be using their website and social media sites to warn consumers about the latest frauds and the people behind them.
The current 10 most-wanted list — which includes two people who have already been arrested — lists people alleged to have been involved in credit card fraud, bogus mortgage applications, and ATM tampering. The money involved in the cases ranges from $170,000 to $3.7 million.
Another frequent problem on the site is so-called ATM skimming, where criminals add electronics that can steal your pin and account information.
Hundreds of locations in the city have been targeted by ATM skimming, police say.
