One dead, 17 injured after New York City building collapse: NYPD
At least one person is dead and at least 17 more are injured after an apartment building exploded and collapsed in New York City Wednesday morning, New York police said.
Firefighters are still tackling a five-alarm fire after an explosion at or near 1646 Park Avenue brought down at least one, possibly two, buildings at 9 a.m.
Images showed thick brown smoke rising from the building near East 116 Street and Park Avenue. An aerial shot of the scene showed at least four fire cranes up and hosing down the site of the collapse. On the ground, CNN video showed firefighters preparing stretchers. The CBC’s Melissa Kent, reporting from New York, said authorities have closed off several city blocks surrounding the scene as they search for anyone trapped in the structure. Most of the buildings in the area are five- or six-storey apartment buildings with stores on ground level.
