Muammar Gaddafi killed in Sirte
|
The end for Muammar Gaddafi came as suddenly as his reign had been long; captured or killed at the end of the two month-long battle for Sirte, his final Libyan stronghold, when few expected he was still there. The end for Muammar Gaddafi was also marked by confusion – as to his death, or the current whereabouts of his body. One NTC official said it had been taken to Misrata as a prize by the fighters who had cornered him, fighters who for weeks fought against Gaddafi’s forces during the Libyan revolution. An Arabic television crew has been allowed to film the body. A NATO airstrike hit a convoy of vehicles trying to flee Sirte around six this morning. NATO has yet to confirm if Gaddafi was one of the victims, but NTC commander Abdel-Basit Haroun reported Gaddafi had been killed. Another source said he died of his wounds. One report said Gaddafi and several bodyguards fled the airstrike and took shelter in a roadside drain, where they were found and finished off by NTC fighters. Some media are reporting the capture alive of Gaddafi’s son Moutassim. The head of Libya’s National Transitional Council Mustafa Abdel Jalil will address the Libyan nation shortly. His deputy Abdul Hafiz Ghoga has also confirmed Gaddafi’s death, and added the liberation of all Libya would be announced within hours, “maybe sooner”.
