Large sinkhole in Halifax damages vehicle, closes down part of road
|
The bottom part of the Cornwallis Street was blocked off to traffic for most of Tuesday afternoon after a large sinkhole formed near the spot of another one just last week.
The newest sinkhole – which was two-by-three metres in size – was located at the bottom of Cornwallis, as you turn right heading into the downtown from Barrington Street.
Police were called to the scene at about 11:45 a.m. after a vehicle was damaged after driving over the large depression, Halifax Regional Police spokesman Const. Brian Palmeter said.
Last Wednesday, some traffic lanes were closed at the Barrington, Cornwallis and Upper Water Street intersection after the municipality warned motorists about another “sinkhole forming” in the road.
That sinkhole was a two-foot depression in the asphalt that broke a sewer line underneath the street.
“It’s uncommon, but we’re trying to determine what’s happened,” Halifax Water spokesman James Campbell said of having two sinkholes, in six days, in the same vicinity. “Heritage Gas has done some work there in the past, and we’re trying to determine if there’s any connection there. There might not be, but there might be.”
Workers from Heritage Gas and Halifax Water were both on scene Tuesday. Heritage Gas repaired the hole because a gas line of theirs could be seen inside.
Jim Bracken, president of Heritage Gas Limited, says there was no gas leak from the sinkhole, and the pipe didn’t appear to be damaged.
He could only speculate as to what the cause for this latest sinkhole might be.
Campbell said they ran an underground video line from Brunswick, down Cornwallis to Barrington on Tuesday to see if Monday’s heavy rains caused any impact or damage to the water lines. He said nothing was noticed.
“Apparently, it’s intact, so that’s all good,” Campbell said, adding that more video-line work will happen on Wednesday. http://metronews.ca
