Harper heads to Nunavut gold mine
|
CBC News- Prime Minister Stephen Harper continues his annual trip to the Far North on Wednesday with a visit to a gold mine in Baker Lake, Nunavut.
The prime minister is expected to make several announcements focusing on economic and social development during his sixth Arctic tour, which runs until Aug. 26.
The gold mine he’ll be visiting has transformed the local economy and been a growing source of employment for Inuit across the region.
Harper spent much of Tuesday in the Arctic community of Resolute, where 12 people were killed in a plane crash on the weekend.
While Harper travels around the region, officials will continue their search for answers to why the Boeing 737-200 crashed. A final report on the crash could take more than a year
Paying his respects to grieving Resolute Bay villagers, Harper said the joy he usually feels during his Far North travels has been missing this year. He laid a wreath at the community centre and talked to local people and emergency workers about the response to the crash.
The crash came while the Canadian Forces were conducting an Arctic military exercise. Harper said it was fortunate the military was nearby at the time of the crash, but it would not be realistic to establish full emergency response resources throughout the Arctic.
