A former Canadian Food Inspection Agency employee has been charged with breach of trust after he was arrested allegedly trying to export dangerous pathogens from the country.
Dr. Klaus Nielsen was arrested on his way to the Ottawa airport last Oct. 24, according to an RCMP news release.
The news release said a search found 17 vials of live brucella bacteria, which can infect people and livestock. The RCMP says a Canada-wide warrant has been issued for Wei Ling Yu, who is also described as a former Canadian Food Inspection Agency employee.
According to the news release, the RCMP was first informed of Nielsen and Yu’s activity in March 2011 by the food inspection agency, which suspected them of attempting to steal its intellectual property for their own commercial use.
Neilsen has been charged with breach of trust and multiple criminal offences related to transporting and exporting dangerous goods.
He is next due in court on April 17 in Ottawa.
