Best New Additions to the CNE
|
The CNE is a long-standing Toronto tradition, having been founded way back in 1879. Since then we’ve continued to spend the 18 days leading up to Labour Day enjoying The Ex, but with less agriculture and manufacturing and more rides, food, concerts and, of course, the Air Show. There’s still something different to see each year as they keep coming up with new ways to entertain us. Check out what’s brand new for 2012 at the CNE.
MIDWAY: It may not be as impressive as Leviathan, but there's a new coaster at the CNE too: Nitro, a 300 metre track full of twists, drops and dives. Adrenaline junkies can also try the new zip line across the grounds, while those looking for something a little more relaxing can enjoy the Sky Ride. Operating like a ski lift, the ride transports guests between the Princes' Gates and the BMO Field from 40 feet in the air with a view of the CNE grounds, Lake Ontario, Toronto Island and the city skyline. Nitro and the Sky Ride are included in CNE ride passes, but there's an extra fee to try the Zip Line.
FOOD: The food building is always a big draw at the CNE - where else can you get a Krispy Kreme burger? - and this year they've added even more options. Far East Taco cashes in on Toronto's latest foodie craze, offering up tacos with unique fillings like kalbi, bulgogi, spicy pork and more. There’s also PULL'D, specializing in pulled meats, raw food from Vie, and Bacon Nation, which is a pork-lovers dreams come true with bacon and Nutella sandwiches, bacon popcorn and other bacon coated treats. Other new food additions offer up baked potatoes, Lebanese-style baked goods, fresh fruit smoothies and more. EXHIBITS: There's always plenty to see outside of the midway, including the Canadian National Forces display and a Sandcastle competition, but 2012 includes two brand new and very different exhibits. First is a tribute to the War of 1812 and the Battle of York, which took place on CNE Grounds. The area also housed both French and British forts, Fort Rouille and Stanley Barracks respectively. On a different side of history, there's also Rock ‘n Roll Will Never Die!. The exhibit celebrates the classic rock icons The Beatles, The Rolling Stones and The Beach Boys through photographs and memorabilia.
