Apple's iPhone 5 hits stores
|
TORONTO, Ont. - Tech enthusiasts and Apple-devotees lined up and waited for the Apple iPhone 5. The company's latest smartphone went on sale in stores at 8 a.m. ET, Friday.
In Toronto, around 100 people lined up inside the Eaton Centre as of 7 a.m. waiting to buy the latest smartphone.
One Apple devotee named Danny said he's been in line since 11 p.m. Wednesday. However, he got a lot of help from his sister, Raine.
"I'm Danny's bathroom attendant -- you know, when he needs to go. I keep his seat [in line] warm for him when he needs to walk around. You need a good support team when you're here ... I'm the Apple pit crew. He comes, he goes, I fix, he stays, he gets the glory; I'm behind there making it all happen," she said.
Some people spent the night in line playing video games, doing homework, or just chatting about the new iPhone.
The iPhone 5 represents the first major revision of the iPhone's screen size since the first model was introduced in 2007.
The new iPhone has an elongated screen, at 10 centimetres measured diagonally. That allows room for another row of icons and lets widescreen movies fit better. Earlier models had 8.9-centimetre screens.
The new phone is also thinner and weighs less than previous versions.
Apple has been flooded with pre-orders for the new iPhone 5, ahead of Friday's launch.
Apple started taking orders at 3 a.m. on Sept. 14. Orders during the first 24 hours more than doubled what Apple had for its predecessor, the iPhone 4S, over the same period last October.
Apple said that while most orders will be delivered Friday, when the phone goes on sale in stores in nine countries, demand for the iPhone 5 exceeds the initial supply. That means some of the devices will be delivered in October.
Apple share have risen 86 per cent since Oct. 5, 2011, when CEO Steve Jobs died. http://www.680news.com
