Police in Windsor, Ont., seized 71 sealed tuna cans containing 985 grams of marijuana on Thursday.
The find came after police stopped a pickup truck with a man and a woman inside. Officers found 36 grams of marijuana sealed inside two tuna cans in the woman's purse. Both people were arrested without incident.
Police then executed a search warrant at 2975 Northway Ave. It was there that police seized the 71 cans of pot, as well as 38 grams of marijuana resin.
The value of the pot and resin that were seized from the home and truck totalled $11,000.
In addition, police say they found and seized a number of items consistent with drug trafficking. In particular, they seized an electronic canning machine and a box of empty tuna cans, two digital scales and cash.
Police said the practice of packaging marijuana inside tuna cans has been widespread on Canada's West Coast. However, they said it is a relatively new scheme of packaging pot in Windsor and the surrounding area.
A 41-year-old man and a 31-year-old woman — both from Windsor — have been charged with two counts of possession of a controlled substance for the purpose of trafficking and possession of a controlled substance.
