Lua Shayenne is founder of the African dance company, Lua Shayenne & Co. whose works explore current subject matters, promote inclusion and diversity with the aim to be a source of progress whether it be social, moral or spiritual. She regularly trains with her mentor Debbie Wilson and frequently travels to research and train in traditional and contemporary African dance. She has studied at Legon University in Accra, Ghana (’07) and thanks to the Canada and the Ontario Arts Councils, in Mali, Senegal and Guinea (’09-’11) including an individual intensive with Vincent Mantsoe in France (’12). Performance highlights include her productions DEPARTURE 00:00, (2012 – Lower Ossington theatre) & Djaa (Festival International Danse Encore – Québec, 2013), Dance ON weekend, Dusk Dances, Dance Immersion Showcase/Fleck Theatre, LA PLACE (Italy) & Kuumba. As a dancer, she has worked with Kaeja D’dance, Chester Whitmore, KasheDance, Eleo Pomare, Coba amogst others. She has choreographed for Dusk Dances, Porch View Dances, Iona Css, No Man’s Land and NIA centre. Lua was a juror for the 2012/13 DORA Awards and is a 2013 recipient of the BMO seeding Fund for her project Under the Baobab.
