Mo Jamal (Mohsen Jamal) is a Canadian-Iranian artist, active in Iran, France, Germany, the U.S. and Canada. He graduated from Tehran University with a Master's of Fine Arts degree (1960-66). Mohsen was a political activist during the Shah regime, arrested by the Savak secret police, and incarcerated for five years, where he was subjected to torture. After his release from prison, he moved with his wife to Paris as an émigré. There he continued his fine art studies at the Sorbonne (1978-79). He and his wife Shahla Jamal, while pursuing doctoral studies and attending art history classes at the University of Sorbonne in Paris, interrupted their studies to participate in the revolution of 1979. The urgency of the event, he believed, required their presence to support democracy. A few years later and after further political unrest under Ayatollah Khomeini, he escaped to Germany, where he founded the Art Direct gallery. After a nine year residence, he lived in the U.S. for eight years, then in Canada became a citizen with his wife and four sons. He has achieved over fifty art shows, and worked in various media and genres - from paintings and cartooning, to violin compositions. His art teaching experience includes thirteen years in Iran, and active art and music teaching outside of Iran.
