Homeland Variations explores the journey of seeking and accepting home. It begins with a flow of atmospheric sound texture, and gypsy chants, with kamancheh (Persian upright fiddle) and saxophone punctuating the vocals. Soul and R&B rhythms blend into industrial and electronic patterns, highlighting the reality of our urban multicultural lives. The conversation between Middle Eastern and African motifs and Indian and Far Eastern percussion explores the sacred moments of the journey. Emotions range from deep sorrow with the sepulchral sound of duduk (Armenian woodwind), to ecstatic rituals of Sufi dance through the juxtaposition of African percussion, kamancheh and tanbour (Kurdish lute).
Homeland is created and directed by Setareh Delzendeh, Artistic Director of Godot Art Productions. Delzendeh is known for creating performances that juxtapose different art disciplines, such as her 2009 production of Less Than a Half. Homeland stars exceptionally gifted actress Bahareh Yaraghi. Award-winning musician Reza Moghaddas has created original compositions and the sound design of the production, performed by him and talented percussionist Lorenzo Castelli.
