Day of the Dead is an ancient festivity with origins in pre-Hispanic Mexico. It’s a time to remember the dead and celebrate the continuity of life – but it is not a morbid occasion. Families gather to tell stories and create ofrendas (altars), decorated with earthly pleasures once enjoyed by the deceased. It is a warm social environment with bright decorations and an abundance of food, drink and great company.
Harbourfront Centre, the Mexican Consulate and the Mexican community celebrate this historic festivity with a weekend filled with music, folkloric dance, community-created ofrendas, children’s crafts, artwork, cooking demonstrations and much more.
