The playwright's trademark bon mots sprinkle this classic comedy, but director Paul Hardy transposes the play to the 1980's instead of 1890's-"Dynasty"-style big hair and shoulder pads in the era of Margaret Thatcher. England is still a very class-conscious society, and many of the same concerns still apply, 100 years later.
In this portrait of the opulent rich and their ironic existential foils, Lord Illingworth is an (im)proper and unmarried English gentleman whose fortune and pedigree make him at home in the upper-crust of society. He plans to hire young Gerald Arbuthnot as his secretary/travelling companion, but Gerald’s modest mother is strongly against the idea. And secrets will be revealed...
